Government of Sweden wants to restrict the religious education in private schools

In Sweden the Education Secretary, Jan Bjorklund indicated that one wants to finish the influence of the religion in the private schools and he says that it is an attempt for preparing the diffusion of what they consider to be a religious fundamentalism.

The new rules written by the Government of center - right would prohibit the religious elements in subjects that were not definitely a religion, like the biology. Bjorklund affirmed that the students must be protected from any form of fundamentalism.

His declarations take place after a legal dispute in which there is involved a sector of the evangelical Christianity that tries to create a new denominational school in the southeast of Sweden. The “Exclusive Association of the Brotherhood Christens”, that this way calls, obtained the legal permission of an administrative tribunal of the county to open the school after promising to continue the Swedish education plan and receive properly the students.

The decision was hardly criticized since it is considered that the group isolates himself himself on having imposed a big number of restrictions on his members and pupils and having pushed the theory of the evolution back.

There are 67 elementary schools and six institutes of secondary education with a confessional orientation in Sweden, extremely lay country. Most of them are Christian. They are excluded from the school system public but governed by the laws and Swedish norms of education in which they are framed.

The Government claims that the law is not clear about all that religious influence is allowed in the different educational matters. The new proposed rules, which need the parliamentary approval, would be introduced in 2009.

Neuman mentioned that it did not seem correct to him that the pass of a student of natural sciences was depending answering that God created the world. Also, he added that it would be necessary that the schools were reporting of the economic donations that should receive the authorities.

Clear it is that there will be the one who answers that also it is important to analyze who puts limitations to the lay fundamentalism in the private and public schools.
